So what makes a good cellular connection? What gets in the way?
The very first thing is that you have to have a cellular signal at all. In an urban environment, if you’re a few blocks away from a cell tower, you’ll probably have a great connection. A rural user will not.
The other big thing is your cellular carrier. So-called "super networks" like AT&T and Verizon, will have more connections, and that’s great for them, but it’s not so good for you.
And then, there’s your phone. You know, the one you just spent $500 or more on. If you’re going to buy a new phone, the one with the bigger and better display, or the fastest processor, will work best.
With those three factors in mind, let’s move on to the cellular radios, the signal generators, that operate inside your phone.
The cellular radios
Today, your mobile phone is one of the biggest sources of radio frequency (RF) interference in the world.
You see, an RF signal travels in the air. There’s an electromagnetic field and everything out there, including the earth, generates some kind of RF signal. The world around us consists of RF signals.
When you are using a cellular phone, you're emitting a large amount of RF energy, which other people use to connect to your network.
So what happens is you're sending out energy with your phone, and what you are trying to get out is an RF signal, and the cell phone is trying to capture it and create it in a form that it can transmit.
So in theory, it should be simple.
Except for the fact that cell phones are complicated. It’s a lot more complicated than a speaker and a microphone.
